Allied Media Conference Will Explore Connections Between Social Justice, Art, Technology And Design

Organizers, artists, technologists, dancers, kids, journalists, policy-makers and change-makers from all over the continent will be heading to Detroit from June 20-23 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the The Allied Media Conference.

The goal of the conference is to celebrate the intersections of art, social justice, design and technology. We learn how to use new tools through hands-on sessions, and strategize on how to use those tools to build the world we want to see. This year we’re excited to welcome over 2,000 participants for a weekend of building strategies for a more just, creative and collaborative world.

The themes of the event are shaped by a series of tracks, practice spaces and network gatherings. This year there will be close to 200 hands-on trainings, strategy sessions and panels.

Tracks: takes the form of workshops, strategy sessions, presentations or caucuses that explore a focus area of mediabased organizing. They contain a mix of hands-on skillsharing, strategy and theory. This year’s tracks include a Detroit and New Orleans cultural exchange; sessions on Detroit Future Youth, a local youth program; print-based media, fierce fashion futures; games and play; research justice; science and social justice; webmaking; and media justice.

Practices Spaces: offers hands-on sessions and open studio time to foster collaborative art and media projects. They include Movement // Movement, a blend of techniquebased workshops of all kinds that will forge connections to participants hearts, bones and muscles; Transformative Arts; Discovering Technology Lab; Healing Justice; Kids Transform the World!

Network gatherings: day-long mini-conferences that take place the Thursday before the AMC for focused strategy conversations within networks. This year’s are Detroit Future Schools, which will focus on ways for students to experience and exercise more ownership over a local school program; Intergalactic Conspiracy of Childcare Collectives; The Nation Inside, a meet-up on local, state, and federal efforts to address the U.S. criminal justice system, and Brown Bois Creating a New Masculinity.

The conference takes place June 20-23 at Wayne State’s McGregor Conference Center in Detroit.
